Crisis Stabilization & Intervention is short-term psychiatric care for people going through a tough mental health crisis. Unlike an emergency room, our CSU offers focused treatment in a calm, welcoming space. You get constant medical supervision, psychiatric care, and support from counselors. We work to keep you safe, manage your symptoms, and make a clear plan for your next steps. If you’re struggling with suicidal thoughts, deep depression, severe anxiety, psychosis, or intense trauma, our program can help right away.
At Alter Behavioral Health San Diego, we know that a crisis can feel scary and confusing. That’s why we combine clinical expertise with compassionate care. Our team acts fast, but we never rush. When you first arrive, we assess your situation, listen to your story, and start treatment right away. We do more than just manage symptoms. We want to understand what brought you here and help you take the first steps toward recovery.
Our staff receives special training in trauma care, de-escalation, and crisis intervention. You can feel safe, even during your hardest moments. We also include your family and support network. We keep them updated and help them understand what you’re going through. Working together like this makes your support system stronger and helps you stay on track for lasting recovery.

Our licensed psychiatric nurses and doctors are here for you at all hours. They keep a close eye on your health, both physical and mental. We handle your medications, watch for any changes, and step in right away if something comes up. You’re never on your own in a crisis. Our team knows how to handle even the most serious emergencies, and we always put your safety first.
We do more than just manage your medications. During your crisis, our team gives you focused therapeutic support. You’ll have individual therapy to talk through what’s happening and learn ways to stay safe. Together, we’ll figure out what set off the crisis, what signs to look for, and which coping skills help you feel steady again. We use proven methods like cognitive-behavioral therapy, safety planning, and skill-building to help you move from crisis to stability as soon as possible.
Everyone’s crisis is different, and so is the way forward. When you arrive, our team creates a plan just for you. We look at your situation, your needs, and your goals. Your plan might include changes to your medication, daily therapy, group support, skills training, or other types of therapy. We keep things flexible and adjust your plan as you make progress. We check in often to see how you’re doing and change your treatment to help you achieve your goal.
While you’re here, you’ll be part of a small group of people who are facing similar struggles. You’ll share meals, join in activities, and connect with others who really get what you’re going through. This sense of community can be healing. Our caring staff is here to give you structure and guidance during what may feel like one of the hardest times in your life.
A Crisis Stabilization Unit is a good choice if you’re having a mental health emergency but don’t need the full medical care of an emergency room. If you’re having suicidal thoughts but aren’t in immediate danger, struggling with severe psychiatric symptoms, or feeling overwhelmed by trauma, a CSU offers help in a calm setting. If you’re at risk of harming yourself or others and need urgent physical safety, the emergency room is the right place to start. Our admissions team can help you figure out what kind of care you need.
Most people stay with us for five to fourteen days. Some stay just a few days, while others might need up to three weeks, depending on what’s going on. Our main goal is to help you feel safe and stable, then get you ready for the next step, whether that’s a residential program, day treatment, therapy, or community support. How long you stay depends on your needs, not a set timeline.
We help with all kinds of mental health emergencies. This includes suicidal thoughts or attempts, severe depression, panic attacks, psychosis, intense trauma or flashbacks, manic episodes, medication problems, and self-harm. We’re also here for people who are overwhelmed by life events and mental illness, like job loss, relationship issues, grief, or major stresses that lead to a crisis. No matter what’s causing your distress, if you’re in a psychiatric crisis, we can help.
Before you leave, we put together a clear aftercare plan for what’s next. This usually means setting you up with the right care, like residential treatment, day programs, or outpatient therapy. We make sure your appointments are scheduled, your prescriptions are ready, and you have crisis contacts in your community. Our goal is to make your move out of the CSU as smooth as possible, so you can keep moving forward.
If you or someone you love is facing a mental health crisis, help is available right now. Our Crisis Stabilization & Intervention program offers immediate expert care in a safe, supportive setting. You don’t have to go through this alone.
